Foster Grandparents aim to help at-risk or special-needs youth succeed in a school setting by assisting them primarily in pre-reading, reading, socialization, language development, math and literacy skills. Equally important, the Program seeks to provide a purposeful volunteer outlet for older adults of low income, who benefit from building positive relationships that truly make a difference. Our mission is mutually beneficial for the volunteers and children, as well as the schools and Pre-K settings our Foster Grandparents serve in.

Our Program is supported by a federal grant that enables us to provide one-on-one mentoring and tutoring to at-risk or special needs children. Sponsored by Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, we are one of about 350 programs across the country, all funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service. We engage older adults in meaningful service to children with special needs at area schools, Head Starts, and childcare centers. Approximately 90 volunteers receive ongoing training and support through our monthly in-services.

Our Volunteers are 55 years of age or older and meet federal low-income guidelines. They come from diverse backgrounds, bringing a wide range of life and work experiences to their volunteer assignments. Foster Grandparents volunteer an average of 20 hours a week and receive a stipend of $2.65/hr for their contribution to the community. Foster Grandparents agree to a yearly health physical and undergo several forms of criminal background checks prior to volunteering with our Program.
