Making constructive choices for successful school experiences
School-based counselors assist children in making constructive choices for more successful school and life experiences. The program is a collaboration of Catholic Charities with participating local parish schools.
Counselors address behavioral problems, such as aggressiveness, shyness and relationship conflicts. Special group sessions deal with common concerns, such as divorce adjustment, peer relationship, study skills, new school adjustment, and social skills. Classroom educational sessions may deal with communication skills, conflict resolution, self-esteem, life skills and peer relationships.
School counselors also provide consultation and in-service training for teachers; conduct parent conferences; teach parenting courses; and, provide therapeutic intervention for students, parents and teachers in times of crisis.
Each counselor has a master's degree in social work or counseling and has experience working with children and parents.
