Catholic Charities provides foster care in collaboration with several child protection agencies in Kansas. Children who are endangered because of neglect, abuse or inability of the parent to provide care, receive supportive care with a foster family.
Catholic Charities trains and licenses foster families and provides on-going support to ensure children are safe and loved. Social workers visit foster children regularly, providing guidance and facilitating communication between foster family, child, school, courts and other community providers.
Foster families help children deal with feelings and the experiences that led to separation from their families. They also provide positive experiences by including the children in family activities and recreation. Special emergency foster care also is provided in collaboration with local law enforcement authorities.
(also known as Supported Family Living)
Residential Services for Children is a foster care initiative designed to keep children ages 5-22 with developmental disabilities or mental retardation in the community and in a family setting, preventing institutionalization. This type of service often provides shared parenting experiences between biological and foster families. The natural family is encouraged to stay involved and to have regular contact with their child as much as possible. Placement for the child is generally long-term and has a high success rate. Specially-trained foster parents provide for the special needs these youth present. In order to qualify for this service, the child must be on the MR/DD (mental retardation/developmental disability) waiver which is determined by the local CDDO (community developmental disability organization). This specific service is provided to children who qualify and are either in SRS custody or are voluntary placemed by the natural family.
